Harbhajan Singh, the veteran Indian spinner, has come to the defense of Jasprit Bumrah, who has faced scrutiny regarding his workload management during the recent England tour. Prior to the five-match Test series, it was decided that Bumrah would participate in only three matches. Consequently, he sat out the fifth Test at The Oval, even though the series was still undecided.
While Bumrah showcased impressive performances, including several five-wicket hauls, his overall impact was limited. In contrast, Mohammed Siraj emerged as India's leading bowler, participating in all five matches and consistently delivering strong performances.
Following the series, several former Indian cricketers, including Irfan Pathan, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Mohammad Azharuddin, voiced their concerns over Bumrah's inconsistent availability, questioning both his commitment and his fitness management strategy.
In response, Harbhajan expressed his support for Bumrah, emphasizing the bowler's professionalism and his understanding of his physical limits, especially after recovering from an injury. He argued that 'workload management' is not about avoiding matches but rather about handling the significant responsibilities that fast bowlers carry. Harbhajan noted that while Siraj has recently taken on this role effectively, it is unrealistic to expect any fast bowler to maintain such intensity year-round.
Harbhajan stated, 'I cannot gauge the extent of pain Jasprit Bumrah is experiencing, but I can affirm that he is a very honest individual. He is aware of his body and its limits. After returning from an injury, he understands what workload truly means. When a bowler like Bumrah takes on the burden of others, as he did in Australia, that is what workload entails.'
He further added, 'Siraj has done well recently, but sustaining that level of performance for an entire year is challenging. There will be series where players need to push their limits, which can take a toll on their bodies. Bumrah did that in Australia, and it ultimately led to his breakdown. Siraj has also taken on that challenge, and we hope he remains fit. Honesty from players regarding their limits is crucial in this context.'
